Fiber Cement Board siding innstallation

Fiber Cement Board Siding

Fiber cement board or often referred to as hardie board due to the popular James Hardie brand’s HardiePlank ® lap siding, is a very common siding option for many reasons. Fiber cement board is known for its longevity and is durability. It does not rot and will hold up to large hail impacts better than aluminum or vinyl. Fiber cement board will require painting every 5-10 years depending on exposure and the quality of the paint. Pressure washing should be performed every 1-2 years to keep the paint looking fresh and effective. Fiber cement board is a good sustainable choice given its use of recycled materials in manufacturing but mostly due to its longevity and rot resistance.

staining wood siding

Wood Siding

Wood siding has been used for centuries to protect and beautify homes. Wood siding can offer a natural softness that other siding materials cannot achieve. For example, the use of stained cedar with stucco. The cedar lends a natural, softer element to the stucco structure that is very eye-appealing and popular now as well. Wood is a renewable resource and sustainable since it will naturally decay in landfills quite easily, however it is not rot resistant and must be maintained very well to ensure many years of service. Wood siding needs to be painted every 3-5 years on average or stained every 2-4 years. Also, wood siding should be inspected annually for any areas that need to be touched up or caulked.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding a very practical choice when choosing exterior protection for your home. In most cases, it is more budget friendly than our other options. This makes vinyl a good replacement option for aluminum siding. Vinyl makes the list for longevity and does not require paint for many years. Pressure washing vinyl siding annually will ensure that it looks its best for years to come. Also, vinyl siding can have an insulated backing that can greatly reduce your energy use. However, vinyl siding is not as strong as fiber cement board or wood and will often be damaged in a large hail storm. There is also a UV coating on vinyl siding that helps to protect the material from degrading as fast. Once this coasting has worn enough, the siding can become brittle and crack. Alternatively, using a good quality vinyl siding and applying paint to older vinyl can promote a longer life and postpone the degrading.
